The Sarnia Legionnaires made it seven wins in seven tries with a 6-2 win over the Guelph Dominators on Thursday in front of another large crowd of 1217 fans at Sarnia Arena.

Josh Cornelissen (pictured) tallied four assists to lead the Legionnaires (7-0-0) to first place atop the GOJHL Western Conference standings, one point ahead of the idle Strathroy Rockets.  Sarnia's Tyler Cicchini scored twice and added an assist.

Paul Gorz had a goal and an assist to lead the Dominators (3-5-0), who missed an opportunity to move into a fifth-place tie with Kitchener and Elmira in the Midwestern Conference standings.

Sarnia's win, combined with Stoney Creek's 7-4 loss to Fort Erie on Thursday, leaves the Legionnaires as the only remaining team in the GOJHL with a perfect record.  The Warriors were 8-0-0 prior to being upset by the Meteors, who won for just the third time this season.

The game was tied 2-2 after just 12 minutes.  Sarnia overcame a 1-0 deficit with two goals 47 seconds apart before Gorz's goal brought the teams level.  The Legionnaires would regain the lead for good just two minutes later on a goal by Western Conference player of the month Matt Abercrombie.  All five goals in the first period were scored on the power play.  The Legionnaires outshot the Dominators 22-6 in the opening frame.

Sarnia scored twice in the second period and one more in the third to round out the scoring.

Cicchini's shorthanded marker eight minutes into the third prompted a change in the Guelph net.  Starting netminder Blake Sinclair (L, 3-4-0) allowed six goals on 41 shots faced.  His replacement, Brendan Gorecki, stopped all four shots faced over the final 12 minutes.

Legionnaires netminder Kyle Washer (W, 2-0-0) made 28 saves to win his second game in as many starts.  Washer also earned his first career GOJHL assist on Abercrombie's game-winning goal.

The game turned chippy in the third period, when 44 of the game's 88 total penalty minutes were issued.

What's in a name?
The new Legionnaires name (along with a perfect record) seems to be a big hit with hockey fans in Sarnia.  After four home games, the Legionnaires lead the 26-team GOJHL in attendance, averaging 1186 fans per game, over 200 more than the second highest average (Stratford).  Last season, Sarnia averaged 449 fans per game, the fourth highest total in the nine-team Western Conference.
