NewsDate: Oct 28, 2008 Vipers blue-liner receives honourLaSalle Vipers defenseman Patrick Murphy has been named the first recipient of the Mickey Renaud Award for Hockey Excellence. On Monday, Murphy received the award from Mark Renaud - Mickey's father. The award - named in the memory of the former Tecumseh Chief and Windsor Spitfire captain who passed away suddenly last February - will be presented annually to a player from Essex County chosen in the OHL Priority Draft. Each recipient must show extraordinary dedication and effort to achieve excellence as a hockey player. Recipients must also demonstrate positive leadership traits on the ice as well as provide support and a positive attitude to other players. Murphy, who played minor midget in Windsor last season, was selected in the 14th round (278th overall) by the Windsor Spitfires in last May's OHL Priority Draft. Future award recipients of the annual award will be named by the Spitfires immediately following the completion of the OHL draft in May of each year. |
